We are not facing one crisis. We are facing many crises, and they are feeding each other.
The polycrisis is the convergence of multiple interconnected crises. Climate change. Inequality. Institutional decay. Technological disruption. Mental health collapse. Democratic erosion. Biodiversity loss. AI alignment risk. Nuclear proliferation. These are not separate problems with separate solutions. They amplify each other. Each makes the others harder to solve.
This is real. The evidence is overwhelming. Global temperatures on track for catastrophic warming. Wildlife populations in collapse. Planetary boundaries crossed. Institutional trust at historic lows. Democracy eroding. Mental illness accelerating. The trend lines are terrifying. Anyone paying attention has reason to despair.
But beneath the polycrisis lies something deeper. The metacrisis. It is the underlying condition that prevents us from addressing the visible crises. Our systems of meaning-making, coordination, and collective action are breaking down. We cannot agree on what is true. We cannot coordinate at scale. We cannot imagine futures worth building.
We cannot solve problems we cannot imagine solving. We cannot build futures we cannot imagine building.
Right now, when people imagine the future, they imagine dystopia. Or they avoid imagining altogether. Learned helplessness at civilizational scale. Stuck in a loop: cannot believe better is possible, so do not try to create it, so it does not happen, so believe even less.
Despair is intelligent. In many cases it is an honest response to overwhelming evidence. The trend lines are terrifying. Anyone paying attention has reason to despair.
AND. Despair does not equal accuracy. Inevitability feels reasonable, but extrapolation is not destiny. Hold both. The honest assessment of where we are AND the refusal to collapse possibility to zero.
The imagination crisis did not cause our problems. It is what prevents us from solving them. Drawdown lists over eighty existing, scalable solutions to climate change. We produce enough food for ten billion people. The cost to end extreme poverty is one-fifth of one percent of global GDP. The solutions exist. The technology exists. The resources exist. What does not exist is the shared belief that deploying them is possible. The shared story that makes sense of where we are and points toward where we could go.
The metacrisis. The lock on the door. Until it is addressed, the other doors remain closed. Breaking the loop is the precondition for everything else.
Something fundamental has broken in how we see the future. And that something is the foundation everything else is built on.
