The Public Canon

How the platform works, and the crowdsourced public canon at the heart of it.
Connect, not collect. What is live today, and what is designed and still being built.  ·  See also: the platform brief.

The one idea

Most platforms collect from people to build something the platform owns. EVERYONE does the opposite. It connects people to build something that belongs to all of them: a living, crowdsourced public canon. Three words hold the whole posture. Connect, not collect.

A work, on its own, is a broadcast. One voice, outward to many, in one direction. The public canon turns that broadcast into a conversation that accumulates, and a community that wakes itself up.

What the public canon is

As people meet a work, they do not only take it in. They ask it questions, they comment, they tell the story from their own life, they push back. Each of those responses, with the person's consent, becomes part of a growing shared body of human contribution that lives around the work. That body is the canon. It is not engagement exhaust to be mined. It is the real material. The work was the seed. The canon is what grows.

How it works

  1. A work gets a living edition. It can be read, and it can be talked to. A companion holds the entire work and meets each reader where they are.
  2. Readers contribute in whatever way is lowest-friction for them. A question, a reaction, a story, a challenge.
  3. With consent, those contributions join the public canon. Anonymous by default, attributed only if the person chooses, and theirs to remove at any time.
  4. The canon is curated, not mirrored. One voice is drawn from many, and the rare, alive lines are surfaced as they are.
  5. The creator can answer real people directly, or hear, in one place, what the whole readership is discovering together.

The ethic, built into the architecture

This only works if people trust it, so the trust is structural, not a promise added on top. Collect only the minimum required to give real value. A person's words stay theirs, anonymous by default and withdrawable always. Never use what is shared against the people who shared it. No feed to game, no algorithm optimizing for outrage. The only mechanics are invitation, contribution, and recognition.

Why it matters

A book finishes. A canon does not. The claim underneath all of it is simple. This kind of work was never only about sharing ideas. It is about transforming the reader, and not from the top down. When a readership begins to add what it knows, one person's hard question becomes a light for the next, and a community starts, collaboratively and iteratively, to wake itself up.

The creator designs the field. EVERYONE is the engine that fills it with a guide, a memory, and the others.

How a creator plugs in

A creator brings a work and a community. EVERYONE provides the engine underneath: the companion that holds the whole work in mind, the reading and contribution surface, the public canon itself, the membership and member-specific access layer, and a value model where those who can give sponsor those who cannot. The team funds the team. Sliding scale, including free, because cost should never be the reason someone is kept out. The creator keeps the work and the audience. EVERYONE makes them living.

What is live today

A companion that holds an entire book in context and answers from the actual text, not a summary. Membership, identity, and member-specific access, so a private edition can be unlocked for specific people. The sliding-scale value model, including free. The first layer of contribution capture.

What we have designed and are still building

Serving a whole work to many readers at once. The companion genuinely puts the entire work into the model's context. Doing that for a large book is heavy, and serving it reliably at scale is a known, ordinary infrastructure step: raising the model throughput and caching the repeated context so it is fast and inexpensive. Tuning, not redesign.

The living canon, persisted and shared. Contributions are captured; the full server-side memory, the synthesis of many voices into one, and the "what others felt here" surfacing are designed and in progress.

The creator-reply loop, so a creator can answer real readers, or react to the whole field at once.

What is shipped and what is not are named on purpose. The vision is real and partly built. The rest is the near road, named honestly.

EVERYONE is a platform and a philosophy for a connection economy, where value flows through people helping people rather than through extraction. The public canon is where that becomes concrete: a place a work, and the people it gathers, keep growing together.
